Especially at nighttime in cold weather - it's when they seem at their most essential. I've always had a daydream of living on a rocky coast in a home with a widow's walk. Maybe in a past life I was a sailor's wife.



That red light is a beacon from the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, put in place in 1831 to mark the location of  dangerous sandbar. My test knitter is in England, clicking her away with her needles. Every time I get one of her carefully packed boxes (she packs hers so much more thoughtfully than I pack mine...) with a finished object I've designed I freak a bit. It feels like magic.

I came back with loads of honey. This is just two thirds of my spoils. The remainder has already been consumed.

That jar to the left is Tupelo honey, the most special and magical of all honeys. It can only be harvested during the few weeks when the Ogeechee Tupelo tree is blooming. Any visit to them requires an arduous drive with two toll gates and about fifteen solid miles of traffic. But there is one thing the suburbs have that Chicago does not: Mitsuwa. I love Mitsuwa. Hell, Anthony Bourdain loves Mitsuwa. If you've ever been, no doubt you, too, love Mitsuwa. There is simply nothing not to love about the place.

Mr. Crafty and I make it a few times every year. The squash is cooked in such a way that it allows you to eat the skins, if desired. The cranberry sauce is hand made.
